Happy Saturday! By reader request, I’ll be sharing a few holiday party looks over the next few weeks, but today I wanted to share a winter wedding outfit. Christmas seems to be the time of the year for engagements, but you may find yourself invited to Christmas and New Years weddings, and perhaps even Valentine’s weddings! Here is my approach to winter wedding guest attire.

Know the venue, and plan accordingly.

The wedding location, as in any season, determines the appropriate outfit. Find out ahead of time if part or all of the event will be outdoors so you aren’t surprised! You would not want to find yourself at an outdoor wedding with your teeth chattering through the whole ceremony.

Layer.

I wore this sweater and dress combo to an outdoor wedding a few weeks ago on an evening in the 50s. I wasn’t chilly at all! The inspiration for layering my black sweater over my black ponte dress came from Maya’s black dress. I thought to layer my sweater would produce the same drop waist effect of her dress. The effect produced was a subtle no to the 1920’s and the perfect amount of warmth for the outdoor ceremony and reception.

If you’re attending an indoor wedding during the winter, you can get away with any party dress you like! Just remember to bring a shawl or wrap in case your shoulders get cold. If any of the celebration will be outdoors, a sweater, cardigan, and/or tights are the best ways to bring warmth to your ensemble.

Add (subtle) sparkle.

During the winter I tend to go overboard with sparkle. Shiny bobbles remind me of the snow I probably won’t see in Louisiana, womp womp. At a wedding, however, it’s best to dial back the sparkle. The attention should be on the happy couple, not your flashy accessories!

Those are my tips for what to wear to a winter wedding. I hope you found them helpful!
